What is Daivobet®?
Daivobet® is a topical anti-psoriasis medicine and is fully funded.

Daivobet® is available as an ointment and gel.

  • Daivobet® ointment is used to treat skin affected by plaque psoriasis.  Follow specific instructions given to you by your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Daivobet® gel is a topical treatment of scalp psoriasis.  Follow specific instructions given to you by your doctor or pharmacist on how to apply gel, amount to be used and in regards to washing the gel out of the hair, where a mild shampoo must be applied to dry hair where the gel was applied.
NOTE:  see the bottom of this page for specific instructions on how to use the gel, which are also available in each box of Daivobet® gel (black and white copy).

Daivobet® contains calcipotriol (related to Vitamin D) and betamethasone dipropionate (a corticosteroid).

How does Daivobet® work?
Daivobet® is applied topically only to the skin affected by psoriasis.  Psoriasis is a skin disorder in which skin cells are overactive.  The calcipotriol in Daivobet® ointment treats the overactive skin cells.  The betamethasone dipropionate (steroid) also treats the overactive skin cells, as well as relieves redness, swelling, itching and irritation of the skin.

Daivobet® ointment is used in the type of psoriasis where “plaques” form in the skin.  Plaques are raised, rough, reddened areas covered with fine, dry silvery scales.  Plaques are usually about one to two centimetres across.

How can I get Daivobet®?
Daivobet® is available only with a doctor’s prescription.  Talk to your doctor to see if this medication is right for you.

Who can use Daivobet®?
Daivobet® may be appropriate for people whose psoriasis covers less than 30% of their total body.
Daivobet® is indicated for adults 18 years and over.  Safety and effectiveness of Daivobet® in those below 18 years of age has not been established.

Daivobet® can increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV, so exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided.

There is no data available for use of Daivobet® in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, therefore use is not recommended in those cases.

Talk to your doctor to see if Daivobet® may be appropriate for you.

How long can Daivobet® be used?
Daivobet® treatment courses may last up to four weeks, but your doctor may decide to stop treatment with Daivobet® once your psoriasis has improved and to recommence usage as needed.

Why is Daivobet® different?
Daivobet® is a once a day application.

Daivobet® contains two products in one formulation that work together to manage psoriasis flare-ups; the calcipotriol in Daivobet® treats the overactive skin cells and the betamethasone dipropionate (steroid) also treats the overactive skin cells, as well as relieves redness, swelling, itching and irritation of the skin.

Daivobet® has been shown to work faster than the two products when used alone; Daivonex® and betamethasone dipropionate (corticosteroid).

In addition, Daivobet® gel, for scalp psoriasis, is
- Almost clear gel that is rapidly absorbed
- Odourless formulation
- Not alcohol based (alcohol based products may cause a stinging sensation when applied and may dry the skin)

How much does Daivobet® cost?
From the 1st December 2011 Daivobet® is fully funded, which means all you will pay are normal doctor’s fees and pharmacy charges.

To see if you qualify, simply make an appointment with your doctor and ask if Daivobet® is right for you.

How quickly can I expect results?
Daivobet® is a topical treatment that is applied once a day; Daivobet® ointment can be applied at the time most convenient to you.   Daivobet® gel is best when applied in the evening to be left on overnight.

When used as directed, Daivobet® has been known to show results 1 week after starting treatment and should continue working through the treatment course, which could be up to 4 weeks or as directed by your doctor.

Daivobet® Gel – please ask your doctor or pharmacist for a copy of ‘How to use Daivobet® Gel’.  This information is also available in each box of Daivobet® gel (black and white copy).  For wash out instructions, please take note in step 5 that shampoo should be applied to dry hair.
